In November 2021, I made the decision to move abroad during the pandemic to study at the only privately owned Ophthalmology training school in the region. It has been an interesting and transformative journey. My mind is now open in a way only leaving one's home can. I have learned a new language, made lifelong friends, and gained life-changing lessons. Four years later, I can confidently say that the risk has paid off, and I am ready to continue this thousand-mile journey.

I am deeply grateful to RIIO not only for teaching me the science of ophthalmology: but for welcoming me into a community, a family, bound by purpose and compassion. The challenges of ophthalmology residency are often hidden, from microscopic anatomy to microscopic surgery, but the impact is unmistakably visible. To restore sight, to prevent blindness, is to ofter someone the gift of seeing the world. This journey has shaped me, and I carry forward the lessons, the gratitude, and the vision with pride.

A new country, a new career, a whole new culture, new friends and new experiences; that is how I can describe my four-year journey in RIIO/Rwanda. This is the best place I could have ever been for my ophthalmology training and am deeply grateful. I came to Rwanda not knowing what to expect, but l go back to my country a better person, better clinician and most of all, a better human. And for that all I can say is murekoze! Till next time my RIIO family

“I graduated from the Rwanda International Institute ofOphthalmology (RIIO) in 2024. After training at RIIO, I returned as a junior lecturer for 12 months, a role that allowed me to give back through teaching and mentorship while promoting excellence in education, research, and service. RIIO shaped my growth as an ophthalmologist, and as a lecturer I was committed to training ethical and competent ophthalmologists dedicated to reducing avoidable blindness globally. Now returning to the Democratic Republic of Congo, I am grateful for my training and prepared to serve an underserved population with skill, compassion, and integrity”.

Class of 2023

"Before starting the journey of residency in ophthalmology at RIIO, one of my favorite dreams was playing a part in restoring sight of blind people, especially in my country, Rwanda.

It is not an easy journey, however,  I was very lucky to have various best and exemplary mentors who helped me to acquire both professional and personal development and I am deeply grateful for such an important part they played in my success.

One year now after I graduated, I am helping our people in restoring sight and blindness prevention, and I am deeply amazed by the joy and satisfaction of my patients."
