OPHTHALMOLOGY
RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM

The Rwanda international Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO), a constituent institution of the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, offers a four-year ophthalmology residency program combining clinical training, academic activities, and research opportunities.

The RIIO Residency attending clinical staff consists of four full-time members and several part-time faculty with comprehensive clinical, public health, medical education, and research skills.The main training clinic facility is the RIIO @ Kibagabaga Community Eye Clinic which is a referral facility for the country, while all didactic activities are located at the RIIO School facilities situated in the Tee Off Tower, Kigali.

 

RIIO residents rotate at several affiliated public hospitals with active inpatient/outpatient services. They also have opportunities for international electives. Residents participate in intensive hands-on experiences with state-of the-art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. At RIIO, we offer resident education that ensures exposure to all eye care subspecialties, exposing our graduates to the latest in ophthalmology.

Application Procedure

We accept applications once a year. All successful applicants must also fulfill the COECSA criteria for trainee associate members. Applicants from Rwanda must fulfill the criteria set by the Ministry of Health for specialist education if they are on government scholarships. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a face- to-face interview. Some applicants may be offered virtual interviews. After the selection by RIIO, the names of successful candidates will be forwarded to the COECSA Secretariat before the final confirmation of admission is given.

Application Package Check List

1. Your completed application form, signed Declaration and COECSA trainee associate membership application

2. Short Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages)

3. One-page personal statement on why you want to train as an ophthalmologist 

4. Three references (one reference must be from your last training/work institution)

5. A passport-style photograph 

6. Additional support documents e.g. research evidence, awards (Optional)

7. All the above requirements attached and submitted together in one email
